Record Cargo at Perth Harbour

A boat carrying the largest cargo ever seen in Perth arrived in the early hours of Monday morning. Antwerp registered Fast Sam docked at 4am, carrying 2600 tonnes of German wheat from Rostock. This tops the previous record of 2355 tonnes of soda ash imported from Gdansk.

Workers from Morris Young Stevedore Division unloaded the cargo and put it into store before transportation to Hutchison flour mill in Kirkaldy. An impressive 90 metres long, the ship travelled to Perth on the high tide. David Young of Morris Young explained "Getting ships to Perth is dependent on the tidal system and the Fast Sam was able to make it up at 4am." The ship was unloaded and departed at 5am on Tuesday for its next destination, Hartlepool. A busy time for the Harbour, Mr Young revealed another ship arrived the following day, carrying salt from Tees, North East England. "It is destined for use by Tayside Contracts on roads throughout the region."
